Atlantic City man wounded in shootout has 18 pending charges
Brian Wilson, 28, of Atlantic City, was ordered held in jail after authorities said he exchanged gunfire with Kahree Nesbitt in a Nov. 5 shooting on Arctic Avenue. Wilson was wounded in the leg, calf and arm, and police said they recovered multiple 9mm shell casings and a handgun with an extended magazine. Nesbitt and Jabez Witherspoon were later arrested, and a stolen handgun was recovered.
An Atlantic City man wounded in an alleged shootout was ordered held in jail this week.
Brian Wilson, 28, was shot in the leg, calf and arm in the incident just after midnight Nov. 5. A ShotSpotter alert brought police to the 1600 block of Arctic Avenue at 12:22 a.m., according to the charges. Eight 9mm shell casings were found near the corner of Kentucky and Arctic avenues, and 12 more 9mm casings were found at the entrance to nearby Renaissance Plaza, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The affidavit says a blood trail led police to a vehicle with Wilson bleeding in the passenger seat. Michael Mack was in the driver’s seat and was not charged. Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Campellone said during Wilson’s detention hearing that a handgun was found where Wilson had been sitting. The gun had an extended magazine with six bullets, including one in the chamber.
Detectives from Atlantic City’s Violent Crimes Unit later concluded that Wilson exchanged gunfire with Kahree Nesbitt, 31, of Atlantic City, according to Capt. Kevin Fair. Authorities said Nesbitt then fled with 19-year-old Jabez Witherspoon, also of Atlantic City. Detectives tracked their movements and recovered a handgun that had been reported stolen.
Nesbitt and Witherspoon were arrested that week and jailed pending detention hearings. The article notes that Nesbitt had a detention hearing scheduled for the following Tuesday.
Wilson underwent surgery on his left arm before being admitted to the jail, where he appeared by video at his hearing wearing a sling. Defense attorney Jake Bayak argued that he might not receive proper care for his wounds in the Atlantic County Justice Facility and said Wilson had community support.
Judge Jeffrey Wilson, who is not related to the defendant, ordered Brian Wilson held. The judge cited Wilson’s repeated arrests, including several gun-related charges, and noted that he was barred from possessing a weapon because of a 2020 conviction. The judge also found that Wilson violated pretrial monitoring and revoked his release. Wilson remained in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
