Atlantic City police charged two South Jersey men in separate shootings that occurred on October 12, 2024. One man was wounded in a shooting on South Morris Avenue, and two men were wounded in a later shooting on Caspian Avenue. Both suspects were charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses, and both were remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Two South Jersey men have been charged in connection with two separate shootings in Atlantic City earlier this month, according to the Atlantic City Police Department.
Police said that at about 3:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, a man suffering from a gunshot wound approached an officer in front of the Public Safety Building seeking help, then collapsed. Officers rendered medical aid before taking him to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.
Detectives later charged 34-year-old Rockwell Pohlig of West Deptford in that shooting. According to police, Pohlig and the victim had been arguing in the first block of South Morris Avenue when Pohlig shot him. Pohlig later turned himself in at the Atlantic County Justice Facility. He was charged with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain person not to possess a weapon.
Later that same day, at about 7:10 p.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of Caspian Avenue after a ShotSpotter alert and a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found two wounded men. Both were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
During that investigation, detectives identified 30-year-old Eric Melton of Atlantic City as a potential suspect. Police said Melton had an active arrest warrant and was taken into custody on October 16 at New York and Atlantic Avenues. Officers said he allegedly tried to provide false information to them, and he was later charged for his role in the shooting.
Melton was charged with attempted murder, six counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain person not to possess a weapon, obstruction of justice, and hindering apprehension.
Both men were remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. Police noted that criminal charges are accusations and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
