EHT man held in Atlantic City shootout with son's alleged attackers
Kevin Hollingsworth, 38, of Egg Harbor Township was ordered held pending trial after prosecutors said he armed himself and went to Atlantic City to confront juveniles his 17-year-old son said had beaten and robbed him the night before. During the Sept. 17 confrontation outside Southside Pizza on Ventnor Avenue, two juveniles allegedly opened fire first, wounding Hollingsworth and his wife, Amanda, before Hollingsworth returned fire. Prosecutors argued he instigated the encounter by bringing a loaded handgun; the defense argued he fired only after being shot.
Kevin Hollingsworth, a 38-year-old Egg Harbor Township man, is accused of taking justice into his own hands after a shootout in Atlantic City with juveniles his 17-year-old son said had attacked him the previous night.
According to testimony at Hollingsworth’s detention hearing, his son came home early Sept. 17 battered and bruised and said he had been beaten and robbed of $250 in Atlantic City. Defense attorney Lou Barbone said Hollingsworth spoke with a friend who is a sheriff’s officer, who advised him to go to police and suggested the family first determine exactly where the attack happened and possibly identify the suspects.
Prosecutors said Hollingsworth instead put a loaded handgun in his waistband, got on his motorcycle, and went to Atlantic City. His wife, Amanda Hollingsworth, and their son followed in a car. They went to Southside Pizza in the 4000 block of Ventnor Avenue, where the son said the earlier attack had occurred across the street.
While Hollingsworth went inside the pizza shop, his son told Amanda that four juveniles sitting outside were the people who attacked him. Surveillance video allegedly showed Amanda taking a photo of them. Court testimony said the teens then moved to the other side of the street. A juvenile identified only as E.H. was allegedly seen holding a gun at his side.
Prosecutors said Hollingsworth then drew his own weapon, pointed it at the teen, and threatened to kill him. According to the account presented in court, E.H. responded with a threat, and both sides agreed that the first shots were fired by the juveniles. Prosecutors said E.H. and another juvenile, identified as A.R., fired weapons and have been criminally charged.
Amanda Hollingsworth was shot in the forearm. Kevin Hollingsworth was struck three times, in the left arm, left leg, and calf. The couple ran into a nearby closed barbershop for cover, and Hollingsworth returned fire, according to the hearing.
When police arrived, they found the couple inside the barbershop. An Army green Glock 48 was found on a booster seat. Prosecutors argued that suggested an attempt to hide the weapon, while the defense said Hollingsworth dropped it after being wounded. Barbone said the gun had been legally purchased in Louisiana, but prosecutors allege it was not legally owned in New Jersey, where the family has lived for two years.
Hollingsworth, who has no criminal history, was hospitalized and then taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. Despite a low public-safety assessment score, the judge ordered him detained because of the gun charges and the circumstances of the confrontation. Judge Jeffrey Wilson said Hollingsworth had taken the law into his own hands and that the decision to arm himself and go to the scene was deeply concerning.
