An Atlantic City man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly shooting into a crowd of people sitting at a picnic table, police said. Officer Anthony Grajales-Prado heard gunshots in the 1500 block of Adriatic Avenue at about 10:20 p.m. and saw Dane Crippen Jr. running from the area toward the police car, according to Lt. Kevin Fair. When Crippen saw the vehicle, he turned around and ran in the opposite direction. The officer chased him toward Brooklyn Avenue, where other officers set up a perimeter. Police said Crippen was found trying to hide in high grass. He was also found carrying 17 grams of marijuana. Officers retraced his path and recovered a handgun. They also found shell casings in the area where the shots were heard. Surveillance Center personnel then located video that allegedly showed Crippen firing into a crowd of people seated at a picnic table and then discarding the handgun, police said. The people who may have been targeted left before officers arrived and had not come forward at the time of the report. Police asked them to contact the Criminal Investigations Section. Crippen, 21, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
