Several major roads were closed during the search, and police recovered a handgun magazine.
ATLANTIC CITY — Police arrested an Atlantic City man after gunfire broke out Friday morning outside Sovereign Avenue School while the school was hosting a promotion ceremony for students and families.
According to police, Officer Kareem Kramer was stopped at Sovereign and Arctic avenues when he heard gunshots. Police said Kramer then saw two speeding vehicles turn off the first block of North Sovereign Avenue and head north on Monpelier Avenue, appearing as though one was chasing the other.
Police said a Dodge Charger driven by Akir Abdullah was behind the other vehicle. Abdullah then turned onto Fairmount Avenue, where Kramer saw him fire several shots at the vehicle in front of him, police said. While driving on Fairmount, Abdullah sideswiped a parked car. The pursuit continued onto Albany Avenue, though the other vehicle turned at West End Avenue.
Police said Kramer continued pursuing Abdullah to Exit 2 off-ramp for the Atlantic City Expressway, where Abdullah lost control of his vehicle and crashed. As he fled from the vehicle, police said, he dropped a handgun, stopped to pick it up, and then ran into a wooded area.
Authorities set up a perimeter that led to the closing of several major local roads, including the expressway and Route 40. Around 11 a.m., police said Abdullah was found in dense brush and taken into custody by members of the department’s SWAT team. No one was injured, according to police. During a search of the area, officers found a handgun magazine.
Abdullah was charged with aggravated assault, eluding, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain person not to possess a weapon, and possession of hollow-point ammunition. He was taken to the Atlantic County jail.
Detectives were continuing to investigate the occupants of the second vehicle. State Police, Egg Harbor Township and Ventnor police, and the Atlantic City Fire Department responded, and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office assisted in the investigation.
