ATLANTIC CITY — Police arrested a city man Tuesday for allegedly shooting at another man last month.
Police said that at about 11:04 p.m. April 7, officers responded to the 100 block of Adriatic Avenue after an alert from the city’s gunshot-detection system. Investigators determined that Darren Smiley was chasing a man when he fired several shots, missing him, according to police.
Witnesses reported seeing a car drive erratically from the area and the driver throw a handgun out the window, police said. The gun was recovered in the 500 block of North Carolina Avenue.
Sgt. James Herbert located the car and tried to stop it, but Smiley allegedly sped away and officers pursued him into Pleasantville, police said. Herbert ended the chase because it posed a danger to the public. The car was later found in the 500 block of White Horse Pike in Absecon, but Smiley was gone.
Herbert and Officer Anthony Abrams arrested Smiley on Tuesday after finding him in the 1000 block of Arctic Avenue, police said.
Police charged Smiley with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and eluding. He was taken to the Atlantic County jail.
