A ShotSpotter alert led to the arrest of a teen found with a loaded handgun in Atlantic City, police said. According to Sgt. Kevin Fair, Raquil Hayes, 22, of Atlantic City, was seen driving away from the area of reported gunfire near the 900 block of Pacific Avenue. Police said Hayes briefly veered into another lane while watching officers respond to the scene, drawing the attention of Officers Christian Ivanov and Daniel Arra, who then followed the vehicle. Police said the officers saw a marijuana cigarette on the floor and smelled marijuana, prompting them to order Hayes and his passenger out of the vehicle for a search. Hayes, whose driver's license was suspended, was arrested. A 17-year-old boy sitting in the back seat initially refused to get out of the car, according to police, but was taken into custody without incident. Officers allegedly found him in possession of a loaded handgun and more than eight grams of marijuana. Two marijuana cigarettes were also recovered from the vehicle. The teen was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a defaced firearm and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was taken to Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center. Hayes was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and issued several motor vehicle summonses before being released.
