Normalized · August 7, 2019 / 6:01 PM EDT
At a detention hearing in Atlantic City, prosecutors and defense attorneys described the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Naimah Bell as occurring while 18-year-old Nahquil Lovest was handling a handgun in a recently vacated apartment. Defense counsel argued the shooting was accidental, while prosecutors said Lovest knew there was still a bullet in the gun when he pulled the trigger. Lovest was charged with murder and ordered held in jail pending trial.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — New details emerged Wednesday in the shooting death of 15-year-old Naimah Bell during a detention hearing for 18-year-old Nahquil Lovest of Pleasantville. Authorities said Bell was killed in the early morning of July 25 inside a recently vacated apartment near the Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City. Investigators said six people, most believed to be teenagers, were in the apartment and were playing with a handgun. According to authorities, Lovest removed some, but not all, of the bullets from the gun, pointed it at Bell, and pulled the trigger, shooting her in the head. Lovest is charged with murder. Defense attorney Alex Settle said Lovest believed he had removed all the bullets and that the shooting was accidental. Settle said Lovest acknowledged he had been playing with the gun, unloading it, pointing it around, and clicking it when it went off. Settle also said Lovest cried afterward and said he did not mean to do it. Prosecutors disputed the idea that the shooting should be treated as an accident. Seth Levy of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said Lovest knew the gun was loaded and pulled the trigger while it was pointed at Bell’s head. The hearing was held to determine whether Lovest should remain jailed pending trial. The judge ruled that he should remain in custody. Both Lovest’s family and Bell’s family were present in court and declined to comment afterward.
