Atlantic City police arrested two juveniles and recovered a loaded handgun and a rifle after responding to reports of gunfire on South Elberon Avenue. A 17-year-old and a 14-year-old were charged with weapons offenses, and police said the investigation into the shooting was ongoing.
Two juveniles were arrested and two guns were recovered Tuesday after an investigation into reported gunfire in Atlantic City. Police were called to the first block of South Elberon Avenue at 4:50 p.m. for a report of shots fired, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. As Detectives Will Herrerias and Jefferson Rivera responded, they were told that possible suspects had been seen running in the first block of North Boston Avenue. Two males were detained, but a 17-year-old ran, prompting a foot chase, according to police. During the pursuit, the teen jumped a fence, pulled a handgun from his waistband and threw it into high grass before he was taken into custody. K-9 Officer James Miltenberger's dog, Mongo, found the loaded handgun. Officers responding to South Elberon Avenue found evidence of gunfire, including shell casings, but police said the casings did not match the recovered handgun. The investigation then led police to search a residence, where Lt. Daniel Corcoran recovered a rifle. A 14-year-old boy was arrested as a result. The 17-year-old was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice. The 14-year-old was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Both were held at the Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center in Egg Harbor City. Police said the Street Crimes Unit's investigation was continuing.
