North Carolina man arrested in Atlantic City with stolen handgun
Police said a North Carolina man was arrested in Atlantic City on Sunday night after officers found him with a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen from North Carolina. He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and receiving stolen property.
ATLANTIC CITY — A North Carolina man was arrested Sunday night after police found him in possession of a loaded, stolen handgun.
Police said officers responded to a report of a man assaulting a woman inside a vehicle near Brighton and Atlantic avenues. When officers located the car, they spoke with the driver, identified as O'Vonn Smith, 28, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
According to police, Smith said he had been arguing with a female passenger. He was removed from the vehicle and told officers he had a handgun. Police took him into custody and found the loaded gun in his pocket.
The handgun had been reported stolen from North Carolina, police said. An investigation found no evidence of an assault, but Smith was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and receiving stolen property. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility in Mays Landing.
