Authorities said an Atlantic City man was shot and killed after he stabbed a police officer during an investigation into a hit-and-run crash Friday night on North Kentucky Avenue. The officer was treated and released, and the man who died was later identified in related coverage as Timothy Deal, 22.
ATLANTIC CITY — A city man was shot and killed after stabbing a police officer Friday night during an investigation into a hit-and-run crash, authorities said.
Police responded to the 100 block of North Kentucky Avenue for a hit-and-run crash with injuries, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. While officers were investigating, a 22-year-old man who authorities said was not involved in the crash stabbed an officer in the torso with a knife.
Authorities described the attack as unprovoked. The injured officer then fired his weapon, shooting the man.
Both the officer and the man were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus. The man was pronounced dead, and the officer was treated and released.
An autopsy by the Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office found that the man died from multiple gunshot wounds. The officer’s identity was not released.
The investigation was being handled by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, with assistance from Atlantic City police, in accordance with state guidelines.
