MAYS LANDING — A grand jury indicted Leon C. Green, 27, of Millville in connection with a June 1 shooting at the Fox Manor Hotel on Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City.
According to an affidavit filed by Atlantic City police in municipal court, Green told police after waiving his right to remain silent that he had been trying to shoot James Waugh, a man he believed had stolen $4,900 from him. Police said Green caught up with Waugh at the hotel and fired five rounds from a 9 mm pistol.
One of the shots struck Yusef Abdullah in the left side of his torso. Abdullah later died on July 8 from the wound, according to the affidavit.
Police arrested Green shortly after the shooting after a retired Atlantic City police detective witnessed the incident and followed him. Officer Joseph Procopio stated in the affidavit that police recovered a loaded 9 mm pistol from Green.
The affidavit says surveillance footage from the Fox Manor showed Green approach the intended target, point the gun, rack the slide, and begin firing, striking Abdullah instead. Police said Green had forgotten to chamber a round after recently cleaning the weapon, so the gun did not fire when he first pulled the trigger. Waugh also told police that Green had targeted him.
According to police, Green arrived at the hotel with a woman who said Waugh was the father of her child. She also told investigators that Green was angry over the allegedly stolen money. Police described Green and the woman as having had a brief relationship.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office announced that the grand jury returned a six-count indictment. The charges included first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, third-degree aggravated assault, second-degree possession of a handgun without a permit, and two counts of second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose. Atlantic City police and county detectives investigated the case, and Chief Assistant Prosecutor Danielle S. Buckley represented the state.
