ATLANTIC CITY — The Boys & Girls Club was placed on lockdown Thursday after a report of shots fired on Pennsylvania Avenue, authorities said.
Police Sgt. Kevin Fair confirmed to The Press of Atlantic City that officers were investigating multiple shots fired near Drexel Avenue. Fair said there were no victims, no suspects and no shell casings found while police were at the scene Thursday afternoon.
Maryann McLoy, director of development, said the shots were fired at about 2:30 p.m. as students were unloading from school buses to go into the club. “It was right as kids were coming in — they were running into the building when it happened,” McLoy said.
Parents described being alarmed by the incident. Alisa Howard, who was picking up her three children, said she sends them to the club because they cannot play outside safely in the neighborhood. Another parent, Latisha Negron, said she received a call from the Boys & Girls Club saying there was an emergency and was later told there had been a reported shooting near the building. She said she was frightened but that staff did everything they could.
Staff kept the club’s doors locked until all children were picked up by a parent or guardian. McLoy said the club can have as many as 450 children attending its after-school programs on a given day.
Police asked anyone with information to contact Atlantic City police.
