ATLANTIC CITY — Two people were arrested and charged after Atlantic City police said they found more than 100 bags of heroin and a stolen handgun during a motor vehicle stop Tuesday night. According to police, Sgt. Andrew Leonard and Detective Anthony Abrams of the Police Intelligence Unit saw a vehicle with tinted windows being driven carelessly near Indiana and Mediterranean avenues. Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke to the two people inside. Police identified them as Omar Butcher, 35, and Nia Lovelace, 25, both of Atlantic City. Police said officers smelled burnt marijuana and found a marijuana cigarette in the car’s center console. They also determined that Butcher, who was driving, had a suspended New Jersey driver’s license. During a search of the vehicle, police said they found 110 bags of heroin and a stolen loaded handgun. The handgun had been reported stolen from Iowa earlier in the year, police said. Butcher and Lovelace were arrested and each charged with two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone and within 500 feet of a public zone, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon while committing a CDS offense, and receiving stolen property. Butcher was additionally charged with multiple motor vehicle summonses. Both were held at the Atlantic County jail in Mays Landing.
