Three incidents lead to two arrests in Atlantic City
Normalized · —
Atlantic City police said they responded to three serious incidents Sunday morning: a non-fatal shooting involving Luis Mateo, a stolen-vehicle pursuit ending in the arrest of Chreshull Rucker and recovery of a loaded handgun, and a stabbing that investigators later linked to Rucker. Mateo was arrested on drug offenses and outstanding warrants, while Rucker was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, weapons offenses, theft, eluding police, and assault by auto.
Atlantic City police responded to three serious incidents Sunday morning that resulted in the arrests of two men. At 5:39 a.m., patrol officers were called to Georgia and Pacific avenues for a report of a man bleeding. They found Luis Mateo suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said Mateo was uncooperative with officers and detectives. He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City with a non-life-threatening injury. Officers followed a blood trail to the first block of South Florida Avenue, where they found evidence of gunfire. Police said Mateo, 41, of Ewing Township, was found carrying several bags of cocaine. He initially refused to identify himself but later did so before being fingerprinted. Authorities also said he had active warrants from Ewing Township. He was arrested on drug offenses and taken to the Atlantic County jail. In a second incident, Officer Kevin McGloin responded at 9:06 a.m. to the 1500 block of Atlantic Avenue for a report of a stolen vehicle. The vehicle owner had left it running while going into a store. Less than 90 minutes later, Officer Martina Martin found the stolen vehicle, which police said was being driven by Chreshull Rucker, 34, of Atlantic City. Police said Martin tried to stop the vehicle, but Rucker fled. He allegedly ran a red light at Pennsylvania and Atlantic avenues, crashed into another vehicle, then left the road and hit a fence and sign. Rucker then tried to run away on foot but was arrested by Martin and Officer Matt Stollenwerk. During a search of the stolen vehicle, officers found a loaded handgun and a pocket knife. The people in the other vehicle involved in the crash were taken to the medical center with non-life-threatening injuries. While police were investigating that incident, they also responded to the first block of South Kentucky Avenue for a stabbing victim. Officers found a 36-year-old Atlantic City man and gave him medical aid before he was taken to the medical center. Police said it was clear his injuries had not been inflicted immediately before officers arrived. Detective Juanita Harris later identified Rucker as the suspect in the stabbing, according to police. Rucker was charged the following day with armed robbery, aggravated assault, weapons offenses, theft, eluding police, and assault by auto. He was remanded to the Atlantic County jail.
