Teen shot, officer bit, and more — Atlantic City police arrest 10 in 11 hours
Atlantic City police said officers handled 150 calls for service and made 10 arrests between 4 p.m. May 7 and 3 a.m. May 8. The incidents included an alleged gas theft and armed robbery involving a loaded handgun, a non-fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy, an officer bitten during an arrest at Caesars, and several other assault, theft, drug, and warrant-related arrests.
Atlantic City police said officers responded to 150 calls for service and made 10 arrests during an 11-hour span between 4 p.m. on May 7 and 3 a.m. on May 8.
At 5:39 p.m., Officer Kleovoulos Zissimopoulos was checking property at the Circle K on the 2000 block of Atlantic Avenue when he was told a vehicle had fled after getting gas without paying and that a passenger had brandished a handgun. Another officer stopped the vehicle in the 1500 block of Sewell Avenue. Of the five people inside, three were arrested: driver Marahd Townsend, passenger Yamaad Gilliam-Bey, and a 15-year-old boy. Police said the juvenile had a loaded handgun in his waistband. The juvenile was charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and conspiracy. Townsend and Gilliam-Bey were each charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a high-capacity magazine, conspiracy, and employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime. The two other occupants were released without charges after police determined they entered the vehicle after the robbery.
At 6:13 p.m., Officer Jose Zamorano and K9 Officer Melvin Murray III responded to the 100 block of North North Carolina Avenue on a report of a woman crying. Police found a man and woman who had been dating and were arguing. Maria Suriel was arrested after officers said they observed injuries to the man. While handling that call, officers also encountered Veronica Blount, who was arrested on a warrant connected to a burglary and assault from the previous month. Suriel was charged with simple assault. Blount was charged with burglary, simple assault, and harassment.
At 6:45 p.m., detectives allegedly saw Michael Williams engaged in a drug transaction on the first block of South Florida Avenue. Police said Williams sped off on an electric bike when he saw detectives, but he was arrested and found with 50 bags of heroin, a small amount of methamphetamine, prescription pills, and an active warrant. He was charged with three counts each of possession of CDS, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone, along with possession of CDS paraphernalia, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest.
At 7:11 p.m., Officer Wen You responded to the 100 block of Vermont Terrace after a homeowner reported that Garver Vila was trying to steal a ladder while riding a bike. Police said Vila dropped the ladder while trying to get away and was later arrested on a theft charge.
At 11:07 p.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of Atlantic Avenue after a ShotSpotter alert. They found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division with injuries police described as non-life-threatening. Within 20 minutes, police found an unoccupied vehicle sought in connection with the shooting in the 800 block of Maryland Avenue. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Bellmawr, and police said evidence of gunfire was found inside. The Atlantic City Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating.
At 11:50 p.m., officers went to the 400 block of Madison Avenue on a report of a man wandering behind a residence. Eric Powell was taken into custody after police found he had several warrants. He was charged with contempt of court.
At 12:42 a.m., an 11-year-old boy, Michael Love, was reported missing by his grandmother. Officers searched the area. He was later found at a family member's home.
At 2:48 a.m., officers responded to Caesars regarding Eugene Heyward, who was allegedly trespassing. Police said he refused orders to leave, became irate, and turned combative during the encounter. While officers tried to take him into custody, he allegedly resisted and bit Officer Heriberto Barrios-Gomez on the leg. The officer was treated for a minor injury. Heyward was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice.
At 2:49 a.m., Officer Rudolph Sime saw an unoccupied vehicle parked in the road on the 800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. The owner, Erica Butler, later came outside and was arrested on active warrants. She was charged with contempt of court.
Police Chief James Sarkos said the 11-hour stretch reflected the range of calls officers handle daily. The department noted that all charges are accusations and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
