Atlantic City police arrest city man who had gun in Popeye's
Atlantic City police arrested a 20-year-old man after responding to a report of a man with a gun at a Popeye’s restaurant. Police said he tried to flee, struggled with an officer, and was found with a loaded stolen handgun and marijuana. He was charged with assaulting an officer, weapons offenses, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property, and marijuana possession.
ATLANTIC CITY — A 20-year-old city man was arrested and charged this week after police said he assaulted an officer while carrying a stolen handgun.
Police responded to a report of a man with a gun at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Officers tracked Justin Figueroa entering Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken in the 1500 block of Atlantic Avenue, police said. According to police, Figueroa tried to flee after an officer asked him to leave the restaurant.
Officer John Devlin grabbed Figueroa, who then assaulted Devlin during a struggle, police said. Figueroa was arrested after additional officers arrived.
Police said Figueroa had a loaded handgun in his backpack. The gun had been reported stolen in Atlanta in 2010. Officers also said they found marijuana in his possession.
Figueroa was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, certain persons not to possess a weapon, and possession of marijuana. He was being held in the Atlantic County jail on $100,000 bail, according to police.
