ATLANTIC CITY — A woman shot to death over the weekend was identified Tuesday as Shavonne McKee, a 37-year-old mother of three who grew up in the resort.
Family members and neighbors described McKee as a loving person who liked to joke and create songs. Her niece, Basimah Johnson of Philadelphia, said McKee loved her children and always made sure they had what they needed. Neighbors said McKee also had two grandchildren and worked at Our Lady’s Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Pleasantville. A memorial with balloons and stuffed animals was set up near where police said she was killed.
According to authorities, McKee was shot multiple times at about 11:48 p.m. Sunday in the area of the 800 block of North Virginia Avenue, near Absecon Boulevard. She was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, where she was pronounced dead.
Neighbors said several women were outside when gunfire erupted near an apartment complex on North Virginia Avenue. One longtime resident, who asked not to be identified while the shooter remained at large, said she did not know why anyone would kill McKee and called it the most horrific thing she had seen in her years living in Atlantic City.
Another neighbor remembered McKee as beautiful and kind, and said she had close relationships with everyone around her. Neighbors said she was killed steps away from where she and her family lived.
An autopsy determined that McKee’s death was a homicide, according to a statement from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. The statement said the family had been notified, but authorities did not comment on any possible suspects.
