Atlantic City stabbing suspect "decided to get up ... and kill somebody"
A man fatally stabbed a Cedar Market clerk in Atlantic City on July 7, 2015, and was then shot and killed by police as he fled, according to authorities and witnesses. The victim was a market employee on his second day back at work after returning from Egypt. Authorities said the suspect entered the store without demanding money, attacked the clerk with a knife, and was later confronted by responding officers outside.
ATLANTIC CITY — Police fatally shot a man after he stabbed a clerk to death inside Cedar Market on Tuesday morning.
According to the market owner, the attack happened at the store in the 400 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue. He said the suspect was not trying to rob the store. Instead, he said, the man simply came in and attacked. Surveillance video from inside the store reportedly showed the suspect walk behind the counter and stab the clerk in the neck while the clerk was at the register.
The owner said the clerk was on his second day back at work after returning from a vacation in Egypt. The victim then stumbled out from behind the counter and fell to the floor. After struggling with another worker, the suspect started to leave the store, but stabbed the fallen employee again before fleeing, according to the account in the article.
Authorities said the suspect ran across the street, where he was confronted by responding Atlantic City police officers and shot. The city’s ShotSpotter system reportedly registered eight shots fired. The suspect was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus, where he was pronounced dead, according to Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain.
Authorities said it was unclear what sparked the attack. The market owner said the suspect had been a customer of the store. A woman who said she arrived in a car as the man fled told the newspaper that he said, “One down, two more to go,” before he was shot by police.
McClain said the identities of the victim and suspect had not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Autopsies were scheduled for Wednesday. The owner’s brother said the victim had just started back at work the day before and that “it could have been anybody.”
Investigators from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office gathered evidence at the scene and spoke with witnesses. The article said there were several witnesses inside the store and on the street. The store had six cameras covering the inside and outside, but it was not immediately clear whether there was video of the police shooting or whether an officer’s body camera was recording.
The article also noted that any time an Atlantic County police officer discharges a weapon, the Prosecutor’s Office takes over the investigation.
