An Atlantic City man was arrested Friday for allegedly trying to bring a stolen handgun into the Atlantic County Civil Courthouse.
Authorities said the gun was found when James Boyd’s bag went through screening at the courthouse on Bacharach Boulevard in Atlantic City. Boyd, 31, uses a wheelchair because he was paralyzed from the waist down in a previous shooting, according to a news release.
Boyd was at the courthouse for a family court matter and was taken into custody by Sheriff’s Officer Jean Antoine.
The handgun was described as a loaded .380-caliber Ruger with hollow-point bullets. According to authorities, it was one of five guns reported stolen in a burglary at a residence in Spotsylvania, Virginia.
During a more thorough search of Boyd’s belongings, officers also found a 9mm magazine with hollow-point bullets wrapped in tape and tissue, along with a plastic bag containing additional .380-caliber rounds.
Boyd was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow-point bullets, receiving stolen property, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He was being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $25,000 bail.
