Atlantic City police searched a home in the Chelsea Heights section of the city after an overnight standoff in which a man with a gun barricaded himself inside and fired several shots, including at least one shot at police officers. The incident took place at a home on North Elberon Avenue. According to the article, police received multiple calls about gunfire at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, and the city’s gunshot-detection system also sent an alert. When officers arrived, they heard what sounded like a rifle being racked and a man yelling from a window. Police surrounded the home with a SWAT team, hostage negotiators, bomb squad personnel and patrol officers. Contact was made with the man, who then fired what appeared to be several shots out the window. Negotiations continued, and an officer spoke with the man’s mother by phone. Before 1 a.m., the man ran out the back door naked and was met by SWAT and patrol officers stationed there. After a brief struggle, he was taken into custody and then to a hospital. Family members said the man was a military veteran suffering from untreated post-traumatic stress disorder. His mother said he had called her Tuesday night saying he wanted to kill himself and that he had a collection of guns from his years in the military. His brother, identified in a photo caption as Joseph Gerace of Ventnor, was at the scene speaking with police. The family said they had repeatedly tried to get him help and hoped he would now receive treatment. Photo captions and related coverage identify the man as Christopher Gerace. Captions also say police removed boxes of weapons from the home, and that bomb squad personnel continued searching the residence after the standoff ended.
