Atlantic City teen accused of killing 13-year-old surrenders to police
An Atlantic City teenager accused in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Angel Mercado-Santiago turned himself in to police days after the boy was killed while walking home from school. Authorities charged Jerome Ford with murder and related offenses; another 18-year-old Atlantic City High School student was wounded in the leg during the same incident.
The Atlantic City teenager wanted in the killing of a seventh-grader last week turned himself in to police.
Jerome Ford was taken into custody and charged with murder and other offenses in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Angel Mercado-Santiago of Atlantic City. Mercado-Santiago had just left Pennsylvania Avenue School when an altercation between a group of teens allegedly ended with Ford pulling out a gun and firing several shots.
Mercado-Santiago was shot in the chest and abdomen. An 18-year-old Atlantic City High School student also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. His name was not released.
Ford surrendered at his lawyer Joseph Swift's Northfield office with family members and a pastor present, according to the article. Authorities had previously announced charges against a juvenile in the case but had not publicly released the name because of his age. The Press of Atlantic City reported it obtained a law-enforcement flier listing Ford's name and photo and warning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Swift said he believed that after a complete investigation it would become clear that the case was not murder. The article said Ford would be placed in the Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center in Egg Harbor City, and prosecutors had indicated he could be waived up to adult court.
A rally against violence was planned for Monday in response to the killing, to be held at Union Baptist Temple on Pennsylvania Avenue near both the school and the shooting scene.
