A Somers Point man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting another man in Atlantic City after the two were involved in a fistfight last year. Jawaun Yeoman, 27, pleaded guilty in July to second-degree aggravated assault and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose. He also pleaded guilty to first-degree unlawful possession of a handgun by a felon. Police were called to the area of Sovereign and Sunset avenues in Atlantic City at about 7:40 p.m. on March 25, 2023, for a report of a shooting. No victim was found at the scene, but a 33-year-old man arrived at the emergency room minutes later with a gunshot wound. Investigators determined that Yeoman and the victim were part of two groups of men who had met for a planned fight. The fight ended when Yeoman shot the victim in the back. Yeoman, who was on parole at the time, was arrested more than a month later with a handgun in his waistband. Ballistics testing determined that the weapon, a "ghost gun" with no serial number, matched the gun used in the shooting. Yeoman had been on parole after serving a five-year sentence for second-degree robbery. Because of the parole violation, he was returned to South Woods State Prison, where state Department of Corrections records show he has been held since May 5, 2023. The article also notes that he was one of three teens arrested in a 2017 assault and armed robbery case. He must serve at least seven years and eight months before becoming eligible for parole.
