Alleged Atlantic City shooter who barricaded with kids was on parole and pretrial release
Normalized · —
A 31-year-old Trenton man, Anthony Matthews, was ordered held after prosecutors alleged he shot a 50-year-old Atlantic City man in the arm outside a residence on Adriatic Avenue and then barricaded himself inside a home with four juveniles. Police said a crisis negotiator got the children released and persuaded Matthews to surrender, and investigators recovered a Ruger handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. The judge noted Matthews was already on parole or probation-related supervision, on pretrial release for prior gun charges, and had multiple outstanding warrants.
Anthony Matthews, a 31-year-old man from Trenton, was on parole and on pretrial release for pending gun charges when he allegedly shot an Atlantic City man and then barricaded himself inside a home with four juveniles, according to authorities. During a detention hearing Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Patricia Wild said Matthews also had 10 warrants from multiple jurisdictions. Before ordering him held, she said the case raised serious questions about why he was free given his criminal history. According to the charges, Matthews allegedly shot a 50-year-old Atlantic City man in the arm outside a residence in the 1600 block of Adriatic Avenue after an altercation last Tuesday. The victim went to the hospital, which led police to the home where they found Matthews on the stoop. Police said he then ran inside, and officers established a perimeter while four juveniles remained in the residence. Officer Franco Sydnor, a crisis negotiator, was able to get Matthews to release the children and eventually persuaded him to surrender peacefully, according to the report. A search of the residence led investigators to a Ruger handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. The judge focused on Matthews' prior and pending cases. He had been arrested in Atlantic City on Dec. 29, 2021, after police responded to the 400 block of Wisteria Road for a report that a man had been threatened by an armed man. In that case, police said Matthews was found with a bag containing two loaded handguns that had been reported stolen from other states. He was on pretrial release for that case and was also on probation from a prior drug case. The article also notes prior charges tied to a 2017 domestic incident reported by the Trentonian. According to that report, Matthews and a 22-year-old woman argued over a child, and the dispute became physical. He allegedly punched the woman in the face and knocked over a television that nearly hit the child. Judge Wild said half of Matthews' 12 pending charges before the latest arrest were weapons offenses, and there was also an allegation of animal cruelty. During the hearing, Matthews, appearing by video from jail, briefly tried to leave the camera frame while the judge reviewed his record. She continued with the ruling and ordered him detained. Matthews was to remain in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
