Mays Landing man who was convicted killer as an A.C. teen now charged with attempted murder
Normalized · Thursday, June 30, 2022
Jerome Ford, 23, of Mays Landing was charged in connection with a May 13, 2022 double shooting in Atlantic City that injured Arrod Moore and Rashad Stephens. Prosecutors allege Ford conspired with Emanuel Williams, 31, of Atlantic City, and that the men used a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and a .40-caliber handgun. Both face attempted murder, conspiracy, and aggravated assault charges.
A Mays Landing man who killed an Atlantic City middle-schooler when he was a teen is now accused of attempted murder in a double shooting from May. Jerome Ford, now 23, was 14 when he shot into a group of teens on Jan. 8, 2014, killing 13-year-old Angel Mercado-Santiago, who was walking home from the Pennsylvania Avenue School. A high school student was also wounded in that earlier case. Ford was ultimately convicted of aggravated manslaughter. Ford is now accused of conspiring with Emanuel Williams, 31, of Atlantic City, to kill two men, including a city worker. According to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC, Arrod Moore and Rashad Stephens were sitting in a vehicle at the Cedar Market on Pennsylvania Avenue in Atlantic City when they were shot at about 9:30 a.m. on May 13, 2022. Authorities allege a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and a .40-caliber handgun were used. Moore was wounded in the leg, and Stephens was struck in the hand. Moore works with the city as a member of One Neighborhood Evolution, a mayoral initiative in which former felons do community outreach. A source close to the case said Moore was working in that capacity when he was shot. Mayor Marty Small said he could not comment on the case. The affidavit says Stephens attributed the shooting to an "old beef." Violent Crimes Unit Detective Aaron Jones wrote that he understood that phrase to refer to a series of retaliatory armed shootings between rival criminal street gangs in Atlantic City. The affidavit states that Ford and Williams are documented members of Fetti-G, a gang based in Stanley Holmes Village, and alleges the victims are members of a rival gang. Ford was arrested in Sicklerville on June 29, 2022. Records cited in the report say he was still on probation for the 2014 aggravated manslaughter and also on release for a pending 2020 second-degree weapons charge. Williams had been jailed since May 29 and had been released from prison in August 2021 after serving time on prior gun convictions. Ford faces 14 counts and Williams 15 counts. The charges include two counts each of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder, along with four counts each of aggravated assault. Both men are being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, with Williams detained pending the outcome of the case and Ford awaiting a detention hearing.
